Medical Mutual is proud to be the only professional liability company owned and operated by North Carolina physicians. Founded by physician leaders during a time of crisis, Medical Mutual has never strayed from its original mission of protecting our profession with stable, affordable professional liability coverage.

Physician leaders of the North Carolina Medical Societyformed Medical Mutual in 1975 in response to the escalating medical liability crisis. Until the mid-1970s, physicians were rarely sued for malpractice, and their professional liability policies were offered largely as a courtesy by their insurance companies.

As people became increasingly willing to bring lawsuits against physicians, the insurance companies found themselves facing enormous costs and escalating claims. Unwilling to insure the risks associated with practicing medicine, many commercial insurance companies stopped offering professional liability coverage to physicians.

A special session of the House of Delegates of the North Carolina Medical Society was called in 1975 to address the crisis. Physicians across the state raised $800,000 in capital to create a physician-owned professional liability insurance company. Medical Mutual Insurance Company of North Carolina was licensed to issue insurance policies on October 23, 1975. 

Today Medical Mutual has more than 8,700 physician members and is the only professional liability carrier that has operated continuously in North Carolina for over three decades. We have achieved this growth while maintaining the lowest operating costs in the industry and an “A” Excellent rating from A.M. Best. More than three decades after our partnership began, we are still the only professional liability carrier endorsed by the North Carolina Medical Society.
