Risk Management

General Information

Medical Mutual's Risk Management team provides high-quality educational services and practical solutions for minimizing your risk exposure. We help your practice stay a step ahead by performing proactive research on new loss exposures and continuously reviewing claims data to identify potential risk management issues.

Medical Mutual launched an updated office-based Risk Assessment program in 2007 that provides the most accurate and detailed measurement of risk exposures to date. The comprehensive, specialty-specific program is designed to identify areas of risk and improve patient outcomes.

In-Office Risk Assessment

Our highly trained risk managers provide an on-site, comprehensive, and specialty-specific assessment of office systems and medical records. They identify areas of malpractice risk for physicians and physician extenders, and offer strategies that can immediately reduce the identified risks that commonly generate claims. At the conclusion of your assessment, you will receive risk analyses for your practice and each of your physicians and facilities. Physicians and extenders who attend the summary presentation will receive 1 - 3 Category 1 CME credits.

Risk Management Seminars

Our physician-focused risk management seminars feature nationally recognized speakers including Gerald Hickson, MD and James Pichert, PhD of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Drs. Hickson and Pichert help physicians reduce their risk of a lawsuit by effectively communicating adverse outcomes to patients and families.

Medical Mutual's Risk Management team also develops and delivers seminars that incorporate case studies, claims data, specialty-specific clinical guidelines, and comprehensive literature reviews of procedures and treatment outcomes. We maintain accreditation by the ACCME to provide Category 1 CME credit for physicians and physician extenders who attend our seminars.

Office Staff Education

Our risk managers conduct educational seminars for administrators and office staff on topics such as Risk Management 101, Management of the Difficult Patient, Medication Error and Documentation, and In-Office Surgery. Our seminars are updated continually to reflect risks associated with new medical technologies and the evolving health care delivery system.

Indispensable Resources

Medical Mutual's Risk Management team and customized publications are an indispensable resource for physicians and office staff. Our Risk Managers are available by phone to respond to questions and meet your immediate needs. Our publications include a state-specific Risk Management Handbook and periodic bulletins that alert you to potential risks and advise you on how to minimize those risks.
