Claims

General Info

Matters reported to MMIC by its insureds fall within three categories: Incidents, Claims, and Suits. Incidents are the reporting of any adverse outcome, which may or may not result in a claim made or in a suit filed. A Claim is usually triggered by an attorney letter to the insured advising of the patient's legal representation and requesting records, demanding payment, or asking for the insured to put his liability insurer on notice of a matter. Sometimes a Claim may be made directly to MMIC by the patient and/or the patient's attorney. A suit is, as the word indicates, the actual initiation of a lawsuit by issuance of a summons and a complaint in either a state or federal court.

All reported claims and suits are thoroughly investigated internally with the help of retained specialists in any relevant field of medicine. Reviews are conducted immediately to maximize access to memory and documents relevant to the allegations. Communications with our insureds-via mail, phone, or E-mail-are frequent and substantive. All reviews and assessments are shared and discussed with the insured. Early determinations as to defensibility allow the greatest amount of time thereafter to systematically plan the defense strategy.
