Get to Know Us: Gabe Roco

As part of our “Get to Know Us” series, we recently talked with our Director of Business Development, Gabe Roco.

  1. How long have you worked with the company?

Nearly six years. For most of my time here, I worked out of our Raleigh office, but I recently moved to the Philadelphia office to generate membership growth in the mid-Atlantic. In this role, I must effectively communicate who we are, what we do, and our overall mission, while educating brokers and prospects about the breadth of resources and opportunities that are available.

  1. What do you like about working for the company?

There are a lot of things that I enjoy about my job. I love turning a “no” into a “yes,” which I think is a must-have instinct for sales and business development professionals. From a day-to-day perspective, I enjoy communications with prospective partners and brokers, and I like having the ability to collaborate with my colleagues regularly across all departments, including Risk Management, Claims, and Underwriting. A big part of my job is bragging about how incredible my colleagues are. While we aren’t the biggest, I genuinely believe that we are the best carrier out there, which makes my job easier.

  1. What did you do earlier in your career?

I used to work for a small medical malpractice carrier in New Jersey called NJ Pure. That was my first experience working with physicians and medical practices. Before that, I worked as a sales manager for a cable and VoIP company.

  1. Describe the most rewarding member interaction you’ve had in this job.

It was my second year working for the company. I had the opportunity to participate in a small, non-clinical internship program with the High Point Regional Medical Society. During this three-day internship, I shadowed multiple physicians insured by our organization: a general surgeon, an anesthesiologist, and an ophthalmologist. It was an incredible experience as I got a first-hand look into the lives of our insureds, witnessing truly incredible procedures, including a robot-assisted surgery.

I learned that, ultimately, all doctors want to do is take care of their patients. So as their trusted partners in medicine, business, and life, it’s important that we understand their challenges and go above and beyond to support their unique needs.

  1. What makes Medical Mutual different?

Our leaders are extremely progressive, and they are constantly seeking to understand where the healthcare industry is going, not just where it’s been. Similar to the way our physician-owners approach medicine, our team is constantly curious about how to support the holistic needs of the people we serve. This is what makes us unique among organizations that serve physicians and medical practices.

More About Gabe:

Gabe earned his B.S. in Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services at Kean University in New Jersey. Outside of work, he spends most of his time with family, including his wife, Joanne; his children, Cameron and Emily; his 80-pound Labrador, Arnold; and a Chihuahua named Lucy, who joined their family just in time to celebrate Christmas.
