IRS Ruling Makes Employers Reconsider Health Insurance Strategy

Employers who thought they could send employees to a health insurance exchange with a tax-free contribution need to think again. Dropping group health insurance in favor of individual policies could end up costing employers up to $36,500 a year ($100 a day) in tax penalties per employee.

A ruling by the IRS released in May blocks some employers’ efforts to dump employees into exchanges. One of the advantages of group health insurance is that contributions by the employer and employee towards premiums is non-taxable. But taking the same amount of money employers contribute, allocating it to be used by employees to purchase individual coverage, and still realizing the tax benefit will run afoul of the Affordable Care Act.
